Captain Ketchum

I love this vignette from Redoubt.  For gaming, it’s way too big for anything we do with battery commanders, but it plays to my weakness of really cool figures so there it is.  The base size is what we normally use for division or corps commanders.

Here’s a bigger version of the same pic.  (Believe it or not, when it’s inserted inline it looks smaller but if you click on it you’ll get a bigger pic than if you click on the one above.  I’m still trying to figure this out….)

Captain Ketchum commanded a battery in Preston Pond’s brigade at Shiloh.  I haven’t done much work on figuring out what they actually did at Shiloh – I just needed a battery.

They had 4 6 lb smoothbores and 2 12 lb howitzers.  That seems to have been pretty much the standard equipment for batteries in the Army of the Mississippi at Shiloh.

Not sure whether they had one of the early pattern Bragg flags but that’s what I gave them.  Information about flags is tough to come by.  I’ll be saying more about them as I show more units from Pond’s brigade.

More soon, I imagine.

Ketchum’s Artillery Battery

Three shots.  Experimenting with image sizes too so not sure how these will come out.

And a bit of a side view.

And a close-up.

Not the best pictures.  I put mud on the legs of all of them and you can’t really see it.  Looks like I need to paint the inside of the ends of the gun barrels black too.

The building was painted by Tim Spakowski.  He did a fine job, don’t you think?

All the Byzantines

Photographed all of the Byzantines.  Here they all are in a single pic, individual units pictured below.

The Crusader cav – two units of 12 with the LBM shield transfers are newly painted.  All the rest I’ve had for sometime, but rebased for use in SAGA.

This guy is wearing purple.  He must think he’s the emperor or something.

He likes to be surrounded by these guys.  Makes him feel safe.  Old Glory Clibanophoroi.

The printed banner is by LBM.  The big sacred banner is painted by hand on linen.  Beautiful.  I wish I could take credit for it by I commissioned a pro painter, Scott Morris to paint it.  He did a fantastic job don’t you think?

Here are a couple of units of infantry.  In SAGA you have to put units together with the same equipment, so for it, it would be 3 units, 2 of spears and 1 of archers.  The figures are Old Glory based on Barker’s fantasies about what soldiers were equipped with.  Nice sculpts and I do quite like the figures.

I seem to have lots of distractions.  I just finished rebasing my Byzantine foot and adding these mounted units so I’ll have enough Byzantines for SAGA.  I now have a LOT of byzantines for SAGA.  Conceptually this is a unit of Byzantine Kataphraktoi, front rank lancers, back rank archers.  It’s probably a better equipped Thema unit.  I would expect the Tagmatic Kataphraktoi perhaps to have half-armored horses at least for the front rank.  Not so well equipped Thema units might not have archers.

In SAGA terms it is three points of hearthguard and would be organized as two units of 6, one unit with lances and one unit with bows.

Figures are by Crusader with Shield Transfers by Little Big Men Studios.
